Mossmas

What is Mossmas?

Mossmas is a celebration, recognition, and ritual of interconnection. It’s a time to honour our belonging in the natural world, our connection to other beings, and our love and friendship toward ourselves.

Some Mossmas values:

  • Gratitude for the Earth, this natural world that holds us
  • Reciprocity in our connection with nature and other beings
  • Loving presence in the moments spent with ourselves and others
  • Respect for diversity of thought and form

Why Moss?

Moss is a symbol of symbiosis and mutualism. It is soft and cozy, yet vibrant and full of life. It embodies a sense of simplicity and groundedness.

"Mosses have this ability, rather than demanding a lot from the world, they're very creative in using what they have, rather than reaching for what they don't have,"
- Robin Wall Kimmerer

When is Mossmas?

Mossmas doesn’t have a particular start or end date, but we tend to sink in most deeply during the last weeks of the ending year and first weeks of the new year.

How do we Mossmas?

Anyone and everyone can participate in Mossmas, even without knowing it. Mossmas is about mindful recognition of interconnection and belonging. This is expressed in myriad and ever-evolving ways, so there’s no wrong way to celebrate. Mossmas rituals and events span from formal to casual, momentary to lengthy, public to personal.

Ask yourself, what makes you feel connected to others? To the Earth? To yourself? What helps you to feel belonging?

Any activity done in this spirit is a Mossmas celebration or ritual. A few examples might be:

  • A nature walk or hike
  • Tea with a friend
  • A moment of mindful listening
  • Watching a nature documentary
  • Cooking a meal to share
  • Respectful foraging
  • Making music, on your own or collaboratively
  • Star gazing

Mother Mossmas comes twirling

with candy cap mushrooms

bringing fallens, formed, and foraged

to dangle on the sprig.

From steamy pinecones, we emerge

give our warmest greetings

feel the five elements

and do every jig.

Mossy Mossmas!
